The girl child and I went to dinner the other night at one of our favorite haunts. It’s an old-style general store (pizza/sub shop), complete with penny candy. After devouring our pizza and milling about the store looking for goodies we settled on purchasing Mary Jane’s and candy cigarettes.
My teeth hurt just thinking about all the sugar. What fun. E actually insisted that we purchase the candy cigarettes…we really do LIKE the fine, chalky taste of them. After sampling the Mary Jane’s she said, “Um, I’m not sure I like those. They taste old.” Probably because they’ve been sitting on the shelf for YEARS and we’re the first people to even consider buying them. Yum.
Whoa. You and the girl child had Mary Jane and were smoking together? Yep – I’d say you were a definite bad influence. LOL
Those old time penny candies really are “old-time.” I mean, I don’t know if you were far off in figuring they’d been sitting on the shelf for years. Do they even make them anymore? 😉
Heh. Yep. A bad influence, indeed. I was really surprised that they still made the candy cigarettes what with trying to keep kids off of cigs, and all.
Eek. I’m going to have to
lookGoogle and see if they DO still make Mary Jane’s. They were a bit on the petrified side.Man, I didn’t think they made that candy anymore!
Oh yes, they do! What I was really hoping to find was that black taffy…mmm…the kind that is so chewy it gets stuck to your teeth…and you look like you just swallowed a quart of motor oil. Yum.
I didn’t know that they still made candy cigs. Cool.
To tell the truth I never was big on Mary Jane’s at least the non-smokable variety.
Candy cigs are the bomb-diggity.
Mmmm. I love me some Mary Jane’s…even if they do hurt my teeth. Hmm. Maybe next time I’ll combine the non-smokeable with the smokable and then I won’t feel a thing. Great idea.
I never had a mary jane. But, the ciggies, oh, I remember those bad boys. Good times.
Whaaat? No Mary Jane’s? I’ll have to send you some. MMmmm…chewy peanutbuttery goodness. I bet I’ll have a bazillion cavities at my next dentist visit. Damn Mary Jane’s!
Yep. When I still smoked, the child always insisted that I buy her a pack of candy shmokes when I bought my carton of sticks. They sold the candy ones at the tobacco shop, too . . and of course, I did.
Right now, she’s sticking push pins in her dead skin on her fingers because “it’s cool” and I showed her it doesn’t hurt nor does it bleed.
:]
After we bought the candy cigs she asked me, “Did you ever smoke?” And when I told her that I had when I was younger she replied, “Well, you’d better not do that ever again.” Geesh. Who’s the mother here?
Ahhhhh…the sticking push pins in dead skin…I remember that very well. Fun.
Mary Jane’s candy looks like the type of candy an old lady would give you from the bottom of the purse. She would hand it to you after removing the lipstick covered tissue that was accidentally stuck to it. yikes.
Well, now you’ve certainly changed my mind about carrying them in my purse. Although, if I did they’d get stuck to a mini tape measure or my Hello Kitty compact mirror and that would just be a travesty. 😛
oh my gosh they still make that stuff or are you serious it’s been sitting on the shelf for years? We loaded up on that crap when I was a kid..there was nothing cooler than those candy smokes. L U C K Y!
ROFLOL BILLY..that would have been my mom!!!! When we were growing up going to church and sitting as all good baptists do in the second row front center all the kids came to my mom cuz she had the “goods”. Little did they know that she did just what you said. The only time a kid was really safe was when she opened a brand new roll of life savers. Once they dumped out in her purse it was a toss up if you would get one covered in junk out of her purse. She’s 85 years old and I bet there are still kids going to her church that go to her purse.
I’m not sure they still make that stuff but it IS still on the shelves. I do love all the old candies…mmm…Lemonheads, Boston Baked Beans, Bit ‘O Honey. Sheesh. Maybe that’s why I have so many fillings.
And the bottom of old ladies’ purses…*shudder*
do you guys remember bottle caps? Now those were addicting. We would get those and a slushie from 7-11 while we played pinball. Ahh those were the good old days!
Oh, do I remember Bottle Caps. I never liked them but my brother had a package of them at ALL times. He used to stockpile them and keep them in his nightstand. Ish. I’m pretty sure he STILL eats them to this day (but probably hides them so no one knows).
a nice bottle cap washed down with some liquid sugar shaped like a pop bottle…ahhh no wonder I’m all hyped up and strung out today!
Ugh. My stomach hurts just thinking about all that sugar. Ha! Who am I kidding? I just finished the Mary Jane’s and was still craving sugar so I went out and bought a bag of Bit ‘o Honey. Look out dentist…here I come!
